As many of us prepare for the end-of-year holiday dynamics, connecting with our capacity to ground feels equally important.
While visiting The Bridge to Recovery, we were reminded of this as it was apparent how healing an environment can be when people truly believe in what they’re doing, where they’re doing it, and how it got started.
“I know what it feels like to think the world has no use for me,” Julie Vincent, EAGALA Certified Counselor, shared with our team as we sat in a semi-circle outside on tree stumps.
“This is how I screwed it up, and this is how I made it right,” she summarized her draw to Founder Carol Cannon’s philosophy, “in showing up authentically, my hope is that clients will feel safe enough to do the same.”
Taking time to reflect can feel increasingly challenging as our list of responsibilities grows, however, avoiding it only seems to amplify the body’s feeling that something isn’t quite right.
“Maybe there’s something about healing here that I didn’t already know,” Antwon Bailey, CEO and Alum, recounted while reflecting on his shift of addiction from substances to processes and production.
Founded in Kentucky as a non-profit over 50 years ago and sustaining an average of fifteen patients at a time while keeping a disciplined admissions approach (every other Monday), The Bridge to Recovery stands firm in the value of deeply personalized, intimate care.
“There’s a map inside the lodge with pins across the world. Clients would leave and take their experiences back to share with their therapists, and then before you know it, therapists were coming here,” Debra Cromwell, Counselor, conveyed with admirable enthusiasm.
That was the catalyst for the Professionals’ Intensive Workshop which is a week-long program designed for professionals to focus on their own healing in a peaceful setting. In 2025, they’re offering it four times; we’re not sure how quickly slots fill, but we can say, based on everything we know – worth it.
Speaking of worth, it seemed obvious the facility’s respect for individualized care and compassion deserved to be highlighted. Yes, with an on-site visit, and yes, here in this very blog, but also more tangibly, which is why during National Recovery Month, we decided to encourage movement from all corners of our community, donating $1 for every mile completed.
There’s no secret in the correlation between physical movement and improved behavioral health, however, the reminder that every step counts is what Hansei hopes to convey in their partnership with The Bridge to Recovery.
“If you have emotional pain and you don’t know where it’s coming from, that’s what we are here to do,” Shera Loeser, Outreach.
