Around the world, the month of May is recognized as Mental Health Month – offering an opportunity for everyone to reflect on mental well-being and raise awareness on the topic. This annual observance highlights the importance of mental health care and encourages support for anyone dealing with mental health conditions. This Mental Health Month, we celebrate the progress being made in the industry and our role as advocates for better access to mental health and addiction treatment. Hansei is committed to advocating for mental health across professional and personal domains – making mental health awareness a priority worldwide.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act in daily life. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health issues can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background, making it a universal aspect of human health that deserves attention and empathy.
Despite the importance of mental health, stigma and misunderstanding still surround these issues. Many people with mental health conditions experience discrimination, which can lead to feelings of shame and isolation. Mental Health Month aims to break down these barriers by promoting open conversations about mental health, educating the public on mental health conditions, and advocating for equal care.
Mental health is one of the most common health conditions in the United States. More than 1 in 5 adults are living with a mental illness – with 1 in 25 living with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. According to the CDC, the number of suicide deaths each year is nearing 50,000. These numbers emphasize the need for early intervention and programs to help handle the symptoms that accompany mental illness.
Mental illnesses present themselves through a variety of symptoms that affect mood, thinking, and behavior.
These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and functioning, indicating the need for professional evaluation. Mental health professionals can offer diagnoses and tailored treatment plans, including therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments, to help manage these symptoms effectively. Recognizing and addressing these signs early can greatly enhance recovery outcomes, highlighting the importance of mental health in maintaining overall well-being.
Mental health professionals come in many forms—clinicians, financial experts, advocates, and more—all working together to ensure accessible and affordable care. This month, we honor not only their dedication to keeping treatment available but also the individuals and families affected by mental health challenges. Their resilience, strength, and commitment to healing deserve recognition as we continue working toward a system that supports everyone’s well-being.
Mental Health Month is not only about awareness but also action. Here are several steps individuals and communities can take to promote mental health:
As the bridge between providers and payors, we simplify insurance complexities, manage reimbursements, and deliver data-driven insights so providers can focus on what matters most: helping patients heal. Our campaign highlighted philanthropy, advocacy, and team culture—reinforcing our role as champions for fair access to substance use and mental health care.
My experience underscores the absolute necessity of advocating for comprehensive, holistic, and interdisciplinary treatment, for each individual. It has also illuminated my own biases and codependent tendencies, urging me to confront and overcome them.
Experiencing firsthand the impact of addiction on an addict and their loved ones, the founders of Buckeye Recovery Network (BRN) have a compelling story. One brother fought heroin addiction for decades, while the other experienced the ripple effects of the disease, while learning to offer support and love without enabling his once-estranged sibling.
At Hansei, we firmly believe that prioritizing mental health creates the space for individuals to thrive, leading to greater personal success and a positive societal impact. In May, designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, we were proud to champion and engage in our company-wide challenge: Miles For Mental Health.
The world is constantly changing – and it can be overwhelming to deal with everything going on around you. While society is getting more comfortable discussing mental health, it can still be hard to know “Where to Start” when it comes to taking care of your own well-being.
Mental Health America’s 2024 Mental Health Month toolkit provides free resources to help plan your efforts and raise awareness during the month of May and beyond.
Mental Health Month is every month – Even so, as May springs upon us, we’re further supported with the bloom of new beginnings, giving us a chance to connect and reflect on ‘what it all means,’ from an individual lens, as well as the collective.
Mental Health Month is a call to action for everyone to pay attention to not only their own mental health but also the well-being of those around them. At Hansei, we believe that fostering an environment of understanding and support is critical for understanding and reducing the stigma associated with mental health conditions.
As we go through the month of May (and beyond), let this be a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health – deserving equal attention and resources. We look forward to working with your behavioral health institution, providing billing support that allows you to focus on what you love: treating your patients!
